Prior to its renovation Trulli Mirabello was composed of a set of cones (probably dating back to the end of the eighteenth century) that were used by farmers both as stables for donkeys, sheep and cows, as well as dwelling houses equipped with fireplaces and food storage rooms. Originally, the complex of cones was divided in two separate levels, a higher frontal area used as a house (towards the white dirt road, where the actual entrance is located) and a lower area behind it, which contained the stables, where the actual living and dining rooms are located. What today is the large living room, was originally a shelter for animals. You can still see the stone hooks on the sides of the wall in contact with the kitchen and near the actual fireplace where they used to attach the ropes to secure the animals close to the feeders (unfortunately no longer visible today), that were originally located under the arches against the inner walls. The wide arches were originally the entrance to the stables and are still visible from the outside yard. As there were no bathrooms in the trulli these have been created by either cutting into the thick stone walls, as in the Master bedroom, or by covering outdoor corridors with the characteristic pitched roof named "cummersa", as seen in the two bedrooms facing the entrance. The kitchen that you see today did not exist and was created from scratch in a newly built trullo. The original kitchen was located on the left-hand side of the entrance, and the original fireplace chimney is still visible. The fireplace that you now find in the living room, in front of the sofa, was also built from scratch to create a relaxing rustic atmosphere.
The owners of Trulli Mirabello, decendants of a noble ancient Rome family, decided to buy and restore Trulli Mirabello. At a time when the majority of trulli that dotted the countryside were either abandoned uninhabited ruins, used for storage or as shelter for animals. The main purpose is to preserve the ancient beauty of these local houses, that are unique in the world.
When we decided to open the trulli to host tourists in a beautiful holiday home, we choose not to change the furniture and the enchanting atmosphere we had created for ourselves. We want to offer our guests the opportunity to live a holiday full of beauty, art, great food, and nature. We are happy to welcome you in a place rich in details that tell a long history of local traditions. In our trulli you will find paintings, objects, plants, perfumes and much more that will immerse you in an enchanted world and that we will slowly have the pleasure of letting you discover. We receive our best gratification when we find in the eyes of our guests the satisfaction of having managed to spend a relaxing holiday in a place so rich in history and traditions. We are so happy to share with you all the little details that we have collected over the years. In the same way we are very happy to receive from our guests all the suggestions and advice that they will want to propose to make the Trulli Mirabello more and more beautiful and welcoming.
We hope that this brief history on our holiday home will inspire in you to give the due respect that this place deserves, and that it makes you feel part of the local history during your stay. We do hope that this holiday will arouse your interest in these lands which are still poorly understood but filled with unique treasures that have the colour of the Italian flag: the green of the olive trees, the white of the houses and the red of its land. Happy holidays!
