This hilltop town commands a spectacular view of the Itria Valley, part of the Murgia, (hills) of the Trulli region. Its white painted walls and little streets meandering throughout the town create a unique experience. The valley is clustered with small plots of farmed land growing vines and olive trees, which are enclosed within dry stone walls. The ancient fortified farmhouses or Masserie, some of which are still working farms, produce the fresh white wines of this region. The Locorotondo DOC, a light dry wine with a delicate bouquet, is an ideal accompaniment to antipasti and fish.
This elegant city, home of the prestigious musical Festival of The Itria Valley, is noted for its majestic examples of Baroque architecture, especially throughout the historical centre. The region is also famous for its subterranean grottoes that proliferate the area.
The historical centre of Alberobello has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The first Trulli were built here sometime in the 15th Century and at that time the region was part of the Kingdom of Naples. It came under the direct rule of the Counts of Conversano who imposed upon the citizens a law, that the constructions of buildings could only be undertaken without the use of mortar, hence only dry stone and therefore temporary and easily demolished. The citizens found that a round construction provided greater stability. Some of the cones can be seen with decorations which were of symbolic, religious , mystic and some even of pagan origin.
From the public gardens there are splendid views overlooking the Itria valley. In the historical centre there are many properties formerly owned by the local Nobility. The Palazzo del Governatore, a fine example of Baroque architecture, The Palazzo Vescorile, Palazzo Amati to name a few. Many of these form part of the original town wall and include turrets dating from the Middle Ages. At the main entrance into the Historical centre stands a statue of San Nicola, the Patron Saint of Bari. Today, during the summer months, and especially around Piazza Vittorio Emanule II, overlooked by the old clock tower, numerous tables are spread throughout, serving roasted meats from the wood fired ovens in the local butcher shops. People from all over Puglia flock into the town to enjoy the food, wine and festive atmosphere.
